The Illinois Fire Prevention Association and the Chicago Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers are once again hosting their annual product show.
- One of the largest exhibitions of products, services and related industrial components of the Fire Protection industry in the Chicagoland area. We expect to have more than 50 exhibitors. Admission to the show is Free.

Title: 2020 Progress Report on Fire Protection Implementation within Building Information Modeling
Presenter: Alan Johnston, President, Hydratec, Inc.
Abstract: Building Information Modeling has been considered a new technology for several years already but it continues to advance at an extremely fast pace. As such, the implementation of BIM within Fire Protection Design has been the topic of many previous discussions and a fair amount of progress. This presentation proposes to refocus that discussion on the larger issue of how Fire Protection is being implemented into the Building Information Model. The previous priorities were focused on how the tools of this new technology could be used to provide the traditional work products expected from each participant in the building process. Going forward, it will be necessary to identify and provide the information necessary for the BIM Data to fully participate in life cycle maintenance of a building. This is particularly important in today’s urban environments that are more vertical and more densely populated
Alan Johnston has been the president of Hydratec, Inc. since 1972. Beginning with providing sprinkler system design services, Hydratec went on to develop software for hydraulic analysis, material fabrication and AutoCAD and Revit based design of fire protection sprinkler systems. Alan holds a BS in mechanical engineering and has been involved in design, programming, training and support within Hydratec. Alan is also the holder of several US patents including one to simplify the retrofit of sprinkler systems into single family homes. Alan has provided advanced training on the latest features of the HydraCAD software to groups of existing users in cities around the United States and Canada, as well as teaching classes on hydraulic calculations. His passionate interest in the use of BIM related software in the design of fire sprinkler systems has been an important application of his more than 45 years of experience in this industry.
Title: What’s changed in the 2019 Edition of NFPA 13 (and What’s Next?)
Presenter: Cecil Bilbo, Jr, Academy of Fire Sprinler Technology
Abstract:This course will guide the participants through the changes and additions that have been made to the 2019 Edition of NFPA 13, The Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems. Participants in this class will learn the reasons behind the changes and additions. The presenter is a member of the NFPA 13 Committee and can provide first-hand accounts of the discussions that resulted in changes. We will also discuss potential upcoming changes to the 2022 Edition. Students that complete this course will be able to:
- Identify the sections in NFPA 13 that have changed since the 2016 edition
- Identify the sections in NFPA 13 that have been added to the 2019 edition
- Explain the reasons for the changes and additions
- Find the locations of changes and additions in the new NFPA 13 Standard.
Cecil Bilbo, Jr. is the President of the Academy of Fire Sprinkler Technology in Champaign, Illinois. He has 35 years of experience in the Fire Sprinkler Industry. He is the father of three adult children and a grandfather to four. Formerly, Cecil worked in Contracting, CAD Software development, and he created a degree program for fire sprinkler designers. He was the Director of Technical Services at the National Fire Sprinkler Association from 2001-2009. Cecil is a member of the Fire Protection Research Foundation’s Sprinkler Advisory Council, and sits on eight different NFPA Committees that include NFPA 3, 4, 13, 14, 25, 88A, 101, 170, and 5000. He is the author of many textbooks and magazine articles. He was named FPC Magazine’s 2011 Person of the Year.
Title: Sprinkler System Corrosion and Nitrogen Generators
Presenter: David Fuller, FM Approvals
Abstract:Corrosion and leakage of steel sprinkler piping is one of the most significant operation and maintenance issues associated with fire sprinkler systems. Repair of corrosion damage due to mechanical failure or water leakage can add significantly to the lifecycle cost of a fire sprinkler system. In addition, buildup of corrosion related insoluble deposits inside steel sprinkler piping can obstruct water flow in pipes and/or plug sprinklers thereby greatly reducing their effectiveness. Corrosion causes and examples of leakage in fire protection systems including pipe weld corrosion, trapped water in dry pipe systems and trapped air in wet pipe systems will be covered. FM Approvals standard 1035 on Nitrogen Generators will be discussed. Test results of corrosion mitigation techniques related to nitrogen generator use and insights gained from field installations will be presented.
David is a Vice President for FM Approvals, a member of the FM Global group. David manages the Fire
Protection Group within FM Approvals who test and certify fire protection related equipment. David has
30 years experience in fire protection and property loss prevention. He currently serves on the NFPA
sprinkler installation, fire pump, inspection test and maintenance technical committees. He holds a bachelor’s
degree in electrical engineering from Northeastern University and a master’s degree in fire protection
engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
